Oh well, while many in the common wealth
countries get a day to unwind (or should I say an extended party day) after
Christmas we here in the USA have to go back on the job. Boxing Day is
celebrated by over 53 commonwealth countries to include Canada, New Zealand,
Australia, United Kingdom and Jamaica.
These respective countries have different
traditions. In Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom it is the biggest
shopping day of the year; while Jamaicans sleep in late, go to the beach, and
many journey to Portmore from across the island and internationally to “Sting” – an annual Reggae concert.
The show usually
highlights or crowns the best dancehall artist of the year by putting up the
best of the best to battle it out lyrically.
Boxing day which has nothing to do with the sport came about in the United
Kingdom (suffice it to say most if not all common wealth countries were
colonies of United Kingdom) where servants were given their gifts in boxes the
day after Christmas.
